Legal. Marine Mammal Protection Act 1978

All seals, sea lions, whales and dolphins are protected in NZ waters. It is an offence to harass, disturb, injure or kill a marine mammal. This Act is administered by the Department of Conservation. Effective from 20 October 1978.

This Act also provides for the implementation of population management plans to limit the level of fishing-related mortality for any marine mammal species.
