How will fish stocks be rebuilt?

The pathway to abundance has been laid out in the Rescue Fish policy document.

The bottom line is that the Quota Management System needs to be dismantled. The Government needs to buy back existing quotas in the inshore fisheries. Catch levels need to be reset to enable fish stocks to recover to healthy levels. Bottom trawling and dredging will be banned from inshore waters and nursery areas. Inshore waters are coastal waters out to 12 nautical miles or 200 metre depth, whichever is the furtherest from shore.

In future, commercial fishing will only be accessed using time limited, conditioned permits. Permit holders need to be the person doing the fishing, there will be no absentee quota ownership. More info here.
